Academic Studies
- Studies in African Music Vols 1 & 2 by A.M. Jones. Oxford University Press 1959
Out of print but available in libraries. This is a highly regarded text on Ewe music from Ghana. Volume 1 contains the text; Volume 2 musical scores of transcriptions of whole pieces.
- African Rhythm and African Sensibility by John Miller Chernoff. University of Chigaco Press. 1979
Excellent and thorough examination of the social context of the music.
- Writings about Music by Steve Reich. Universal Edition. 1974
Contains chapters on the author’s first hand experiences learning drumming at a drum school in Ghana. Some interesting observations on how this influences Reich’s own music.
Practical Music-Making
- Drum Gahu : An Introduction to African Rhythm by David Lock. White Cliffs Media Inc. 1998
Comprehensive instructions on how to put-together an extended version of Gahu. It comes with an accompanying CD that features demonstrations of every pattern using mnemonics and instruments.
- African Drum Music by Kongo Zabana. Afran Publications (Ghana) Limited. 1997
This is a series of titles covering the major forms of dance drumming from Ghana, eg. Kpanlogo; Adowa; and Slow Agbekor presented in full staff notation both as individual instrumental parts and full score.

Excellent way of getting an overview of the traditional and contemporary music scene in each region.

Excellent resource. Plenty of context and lots of musical activities covering a rnage of West African Music not just drumming. Comes with accompanying cassette.
